Dumpster diving and other scavenging? Yucky? Depends on how needy you are.
I had a friend living in Portland who found a bakery that at the end of the day carefully put unsold bread double-wrapped in a dumpster. They were clearly making it easy and safe for scavengers to take. In this Internet age, my friend did some Googling, found a place that was discarding cheese, and scavenged that as well.
